Yes, X-Force #6 is out today. It’s the last part in the first arc of my tenure on the title, and it really cuts to the core of the way I’ve been tackling this series. That is: a series of tightly-wound mysteries which are unlocked with a single application of pressure. This episode is that moment.
It’s arguably a problematic way to confront superhero comics, which - some might say - should be easy to tune-in and tune-out; unchallenging and existentially user-friendly. There were - as anticipated - plenty of shrieking voices after the first episode hit, indignant that it didn’t simply set out a list of of absolutes explaining the who, why and how. Annoyed that characters acted in a less-than-awesome way. Insulted that questions were invoked quicker than answers.
Eesh. How boring the alternative would’ve been.
So: thanks to those of you who know stories are at their most delicious when the reader and the teller have formed a contract. Here, for those of you still unsure, is what the contract says:
I will always give you answers. They will always be splendid. In exchange all I ask is that you lend me your confidence, your patience, and your brains.
